The Royal Society's Croonian Medal and Lecture, delivered by Dr David Baker, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Washington and a Nobel laureate.
The lecture covers designing entirely new proteins from scratch rather than modifying existing ones, applied to problems in health, technology and sustainability. Baker's cited work includes developing machine learning methods for generating functional proteins and deep learning methods for designing proteins with genuinely new functions.
The framing is biochemistry rather than AI, but the methods at the centre of the work are deep learning ones, and this is one of the clearest examples of generative models producing verified physical results.
