The DC Digital Minds reading group discusses Anthropic research on a global workspace in language models, taking apart the J-space concept, its relationship to access consciousness, and whether the methods support the claims.
A monthly reading group at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library for people who want to engage seriously with interpretability research without needing a machine learning degree.
This session takes up Anthropic's research on a global workspace in language models, and specifically the J-space concept and how it relates to philosophical notions of access consciousness. The discussion is critical rather than expository: the group works through the methods, what the claims actually assert, and where interpretation outruns evidence.
Read the accompanying blog post beforehand. The full paper is optional. No specialised technical background is required, and the group draws people interested in interpretability, philosophy of mind and AI ethics.
The group is part of Constellation Minds and meets on the second Thursday of each month. This is the inaugural session. Free to attend.
